Road Records Album of the Week

Julie and Dave’s Road Records, the amazing independent Dublin record store situated on Fade Street, survived a closing down scare at the end of 2009 but, thankfully, with the help of alot of friends, music-lovers and local musicians the shop is now over the worst of it.

One idea that has helped the lads through these times is a very simple one. An album of the month subscription. Basically the customer pays a membership fee and Road Records post out their album of the month every month.

Check it out here.

For those who want their recommendations coming at a faster pace (and/or simply cannot/do not wish to commit to a membership fee) the guys also publish an album of the week.

The Road Records Album of the Week this week is :

American Gong by Quasi

The Road Records Review :

Brand new album from this american outfit formed by Janet Weiss (Sleater Kinney) and Sam Coomes (Heatmiser).

Formed way back in 1993 the band have been operating as a two piece for many many years now and are joined on this album by new member Joanna Bolme (Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks). It’s been a long four year wait for long time fans, their previous album “When the Going Gets Dark” came out on the Domino label in 2006.

The album features eleven bursts of guitar heavy classic indie rock sounds, full of fuzzed up guitar action falling somewhere between Pavement and Dinosaur Jr with just a little hint of the psychedelic sounds of the Flaming Lips. Its classic american indie rock at its very finest, full of melodic pop and some blazing guitar solo action. This is a band equally happy making beach boys-like piano led indie pop as they are at producing fuzzed up garage rock tunes, a much underrated band which may just change as soon as you hear this gem of an album. The album will come with an extra bonus disc [so far so good, a quasi anthology] featuring thirteen classics from their back catalogue. Now only €13.50
