17th April is Record Store Day!!!!!!!

It is that time of year again where we get to rejoice in the splendour that is the local independent record store. Sadly Cork, Ireland’s second city, has no representative this year but hopefully the lads from Plugd will be back with us next year in some shape or form.

Still an extremely new concept, Record Store Day was only conceived in 2007 in the U.S. by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehne with the intentions of bringing artists and independent stores together as well as raising the profiles of local music vendors.

The main plus of RSD is the release of limited edition recordings from artists keen to back the movement that will only be available in selected* stores.

Taken from the official Record Store Day site :

“A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a physical retailer whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation. (In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores—not online retailers or corporate behemoths).”*

On top of this there will be thousands of in-store shows around the globe to further boost foot-fall into stores that really need and deserve your support.
