Cork Gig Guide Dec 12th-18th

Earlier this year, Becky and Rachel Unthanks impressed quite a few Leesiders with their unbelievably-difficult-to-dislike (as if we ever would) brand of northumberland folk in the Cork School of Music. Thursday will see the sisters return to Cork – this time to Cyprus Avenue who promoted their April appearance – with the songbooks of Antony & The Johnsons and Robert Wyatt in tow…

Later in the week, Fearghal Mckee and Whipping Boy set loose their first new material in over a decade. Cellist Vyvienne Long has been enlisted to add a little drop of class to the affair which takes place in The Pavilion. Stay tuned for a G-Man interview closer to the date.

Jam-packed full of top notch gigs (including an appearance by ex-Marillion vocalist Fish in the Firkin Crane), the week beginning Monday, 12th December mostly belongs to local talent: Agitate The Gravel, probably Cork’s breakthrough band of 2011, officially launch their Christmas single in An Réalt Dearg; indie kids Hush War Cry are set to chase the 2012 equivalent of that title as they support O Emperor in the Triskel Christchurch; Cyprus Avenue host the annual showcase of Cork’s perennial talent breeding ground Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa; and last, but certainly not least, John Blek & The Rats ready themselves to end a very successful year with a bang in the The Crane Lane Theatre on Friday night.
