Cork Gig Guide (Feb 13th-19th)
Tipperary tunesmith Gemma Hayes returns to Cork on Saturday with the Cork leg of her current Irish tour taking the Ballyporeenian to Cyprus Avenue on Caroline Street. Hayes‘ distinctive voice and off-kilter melodies have always made her a favourite in my book so good to see her back down south.
The majority of the week ahead is focused on local talent with Elk forming one third of a bill with Fighting With Wire and Freeze The Atlantic on Monday night also in Cyprus Avenue, west Cork’s americana folkies LOWmountain entertaining in De Barra’s down in Clonakilty on Tuesday and When Good Pets Go Bad in The Crane Lane Theatre on Thursday. Thursday will also see Richie Egan kick off The Pavilion‘s dirty weekender as Jape – with support from electro-rockers Saint Yorda – play their first southern show of 2012.
Two not so standard gigs this week occur in the Cork Opera House who will premiere Myles O’Reilly‘s As Above So Below filmed within the Mitchelstown Caves in the Summer of 2011 on Thursday (see here for more) with the second installment of Later With The Grunts, a U-Streamed live show featuring bands in-the-flesh as well as beamed-over-the-web performances from various cities.
