Local Spotlight : The Mandolas

Skibbereen folk quartet The Mandolas (formerly The Nelson Mandolas) recently introduced themselves to the world as recording artists when ‘My Greatest Day’, the title track from their upcoming debut EP, was made available to stream via soundcloud.

Rootsy to the core (you won’t find these lads hovering unsociably over a mini-moog or a mac), Colm, Michael, Dorian and Paddy are blessed with an ability that most bands would kill for: all four of them can sing. And quite beautifully at that. Four-piece, timeless harmonies gliding in and out of an ancient sound, conjured by acoustic guitars, mandolins, banjos, bouzoukis, violas and – of course – a mandola, create what at first sounds like straight out trad but far-from-wooden bridges, such as heard in ‘My Greatest Day’, give more than a subtle nod to four bowl-haired Liverpudlian lads who didn’t do so bad for themselves in the sixties.

The official launch takes place on the Friday 13th (ooo) in Cyprus Avenue with support from Wexford’s Lynda Cullen.
