Cork Gig Guide (April 10th-15th)

Trumpets of Jericho wowed the Cork FM studios on Sunday last, performing a couple of tracks live and chatting to us as guests on The Cork Music Show ahead of their Pavilion date on Saturday (April 14th). The most difficult obstacle facing any new band is sounding different. Both different and good is quite another story.
The quartet affectionately known as Trumocho, whose musical stylings are as much sensitive folk as they are carefree punk, do not have this problem.

Entry is free so no excuses. Recommend picking up a copy of Songs Like An Alum Ut Its Nor Really on the night too!

Earlier that evening there is a chance to catch the artists formerly known as Agitate The Gravel play what has become a regular instore session in Crowley’s Music Centre. Terror Pop only recently released their third single ‘Wait, an electric combination of guitar bites and melody hooks. This be another free one so serious amount of free, quality music to get your teeth into this Saturday.

Tuesday sees North Carolinans Stephaniesid take their “noir pop” noodlings to Cork as part of their first ever European tour. Expect dollops of indie complemented by a lot of brass in a late one in The Crane Lane.

Since the dawn of 2012, Saturday’s in Cork have become renowned for throwing up some horrible gig clashes. Well it seems like Thursday is the new Saturday with a raft of bookings made for the 12th day of April; The excitingly eccentric Grand Pocket Orchestra are the latest in a long line of Popical Islanders to visit Leeside already this year and are joined by excellent local doom surfers Saint Yorda in The Pavilion; Dublin’s gifted tunesmith Barry McCormack provides support for The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock‘s blend of prog, folk and trad in the Triskel Arts Centre followed by original No Waver Lydia Lunch who arrives in Cork as part of Black Sun‘s 5th birthday celebrations later that night in the same complex; Last but not least the organisers of Indiependence, which again returns to Mitchelstown on the August bank holiday weekend later this year, are throwing an official festival launch shindig in Cyprus Avenue. Line-up being kept quite hush-hush for now but safe to assume whoever is playing Thursday will be taking to the stage come August. EDIT The Indiependence launch has been postponed for two weeks.

Last but not least, the sultans of string i.e. The Mandolas officially release debut EP My Greatest Day in the same Caroline Street venue on Friday 13th. Spooooooky!
