Record Store Day 2012: interview with Le Galaxie

Le Galaxie

2011’s Laserdisc Nights II had many foot a stompin’ and bum a-boppin’ and Dublin grid gurus Le Galaxie are set to return with a new EP – Fade 2 Forever in May – once again to take the festival circuit by storm. Before that we have the a certain Saturday celebration to get out of the way which the LG lads discuss below.

What is your favourite record store and where is it located?
Mono* in Glasgow’s unfashionable East End. Not only do they sell shit loads of vinyl they also serve up great food and some pretty weird home brew beers.

Mono – Glasgow

Are there any specific happy memories that you have of this store?
Going in on a very cold January morning and having one of the best hot chocolates ever, then spending way too long browsing through the vinyl.

Are there any particular albums recommended to you by record store staff that have influenced your music over the years?
Plenty. The old, and sorely missed Road Records on Fade St were great for that. I bought countless albums on their recommendations.

Has a record store helped you in your musical career/path in anyway over the years? If so, how?
Again Road Records were always ready and willing to stock singles and albums. Tower in Dublin have also been great in promoting local music. Their instores are always a good opportunity for both bands and customers to share and buy new music.

What does Record Store Day mean for you?
It means a day of listening to a few new bands. Picking up some great bargains and limited editions, but also bumping into friends and checking out what they have bought.

This will be the fifth annual record store day. Any fond memories from previous Record Store Days you would like to share?
To be honest last year was the first one I was able to make! I did see a great set from Enemies in Towers records, they blew my hangover away.

If you were to release a split 7″ with any contemporary artist/band who would it be with and what song would you cover of theirs and vice versa?
Personally I’d like to do ‘Snooker Loopy’ by Chas and Dave, but I know the other guys would veto it. I’d also like to hear Active Child do a version of our next release ‘Love System’ his falsetto and harp could just about work on it.

If you had to describe the perfect record store in 3 words what would they be?
See Mono. Music + beer + food = WIN.

If you were to own a record store one day, what would you call it?
Fade 2 Forever, which just happens to be the name of our next EP.

*Mono‘s Record Store Day instores will include Edwyn Collins, Malcolm Middleton and more
