Cork Gig Guide (May 28th-June 5th)

The Bad Plus

Alternative jazz genius in the form of Minneapolites, The Bad Plus is set to illuminate the aged altar of the Triskel Arts Centre’s Christ Church. Thursday night (May 31st) will see the thrilling trio perform the music from 20th century Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, a ballet first performed in 1913.

Fun-lovin’ folks feeling a little frisky can extend their live music feast into the later hours with a choice of sinister psychadelia from The Altered Hours – just back from a successful jaunt in Berlin – in The Pavilion and a night of indie-pop perfection supplied by Terror Pop in The Crane Lane Theatre, both late shows on Thursday.

Rewinding all the way back to later tonight, legendary space rockers Hawkwind visit The Pavilion while Limerick’s We Come In Pieces give an official Leeside launching to their second album – Night of the Living – in Fred’s on Thursday. Blues rockers Crow Black Chicken launch their own debut record in the same venue on Friday as part of the Corrs Rocks Fred’s weekend extravaganza.

Tuckey Street nightclub/bar The Bowery have their own weekend of live music prepared with two-time Choice Music Prize winner Jape headlining a weekend of rooftop gigs that will also include The Minutes and The Walls.

The weekend will also feature a book reading and acoustic performance in the Triskel (Saturday) by American songwriter Josh Ritter to celebrate the publication of Bright’s Passage, his debut novel.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble may be returning to The Pav for the umpteenth time but the boys from Chicago certainly put on one hell of a show. Sunday should be no different with local pop favourites Fred headlining Bandon’s Music Festival that same night.
