Cork Gig Guide (September 10th-September 16th)

This Saturday in Cork is going to be a bloody nightmare…

Midweek is set to be calm enough before the storm blows in hard with three potential gigs-of-the-year all taking place on the very same night. Saturday will welcome Danish delegates for the dazzling Efterklang back to Cork Opera House backed by the 24-piece Cork-assembled Major Lift Orchestra. Having bared witness to these masters of the melodic on half a dozen separate occasions, I can only stress that Efterklang are never anything short of incredible. Ever. Interview with Efterklang‘s Rasmus coming up on the blog later in the week.

For those on a tighter budget there are two more-than-adequate alternatives on offer nearby. Post-hardcore princes Jogging – accompanied by a superb backing bill of Terriers and When Good Pets Go Bad – visit Triskel Arts Centre‘s TDC for what is sure to be an ear-gouger of an event.

Lodged between the two is Drop-d‘s Who Dares Wins compilation launch in Cyprus Avenue on Caroline Street. Some of Cork’s finest talents will be on display as folk punk troubadours Trumpets of Jericho (who recently recorded a session for Dan Hegarty and 2FM), sadly soon-to-be-no-more Terror Pop, electro kids The Karman Line and more show exactly what Cork has to offer in the live music stakes.

Friday night is all about the electronica in Gulpd as soundtrack sages Horsemen Pass By and the contagiously charming electo-noodles of Carried By Waves combine for a fun night on Tobin Street.

A standout on the midweek listings is definitely Scottish folk-rockers Frightened Rabbit‘s visit to Cyprus Avenue. The Selkirkians will no doubt be showcasing plenty of material from new record State Hospital. The title track is absolutely stupendous by the way…

After a slow start to the week Sunday is quite busy with Geordie alt-pop queen Beth Jeans Houghton set to make her Cork bow in Cyprus Avenue.

*Film fans see Triskel Arts Centre‘s listings for the week over on the official website here.
