Capital Capers : Top 10 Dublin gigs for December

MONO – Button Factory, 6th December

Ten tasty festive treats waiting to be gobbled up pre-Turkey dinner…

Again I am late with posting the top 10. Trust me, if I was punctual the below list would also feature the wonderful Wild Nothing who played The Workman’s Club on the 1st. Alas, c’est la vie…

1. MONO

When?: Thursday, 6th December
Where?: Button Factory
How much?: €15
Why?: To put it simply, the experimental rockers don’t visit all too often. For the most blindingly atmospheric attack on the senses a post-rock group can muster and to hear live versions of tracks from the newly released For My Parents. Visit www.monoishere.com for further details

2. Katie Kim, Chequerboard and Ickis Morolo in

When?: Friday, 7th December
Where?: The Joinery
How much?: €10 – BYOB
Why?: The last chance to see Ireland’s most consistently creative talents play her last show of 2012. Well at least I think it’s the last show. Either way a BYOB night is always fun. Visit thejoinery.org for further details

3. The XX

When?: Friday, 7th December and Saturday, 8th December
Where?: Olympia Theatre
How much?: €29.50
Why?: This is a bit of a tease as both shows are sold out. Still, let this be a good warning for those who happen to be offered tickets in the coming days. For more, visit thexx.info.

4. – The Prosperous Market with James Yorkston, Lisa O’Neill and Seamus Fogerty

When?: Saturday, 8th December (3pm-close)
Where?: The Workman’s Club
How much?: €15
Why?: Disappointment at a lack of XX tickets will be experienced briefly as the realisation dawns that an incredible array of talent huddle together on Wellington Quay to create the perfect Christmas sendoff for The Workman’s Club.

5. Beth Orton and Sam Amidon

When?: Friday, 14th December
Where?: St. Stephen’s Church – The Pepper Canister
How much?: €22
Why?: Worth it just for Sam alone.

6. John Talabot, New Jackson and Nanu Nanu

When?: Saturday, 15th December
Where?: Button Factory
How much?: €20
Why?: For an evening of eclectic electronic goodness. Another one close to sold out though if not already.

7. Lower Dens

When?: Saturday, 15th December
Where?: The Grand Social
How much?: €16
Why?: Another act that laid some promising foundations with an impressive showing at June’s Forbidden Fruit gathering. Expect to see Nootropics popping up on various end of year lists over the coming weeks. Check them out yourself at lowerdens.com

8. Le Galaxie, REID and Last Days of 1984 in

When?: Monday, 21st December
Where?: The Workman’s Club
How much?: €10
Why?: Speaking of Forbidden Fruit and various other Irish festivals, the Summer provided the perfect opportunity for dance-pop princes Le Galaxie to raise their game a notch and raise it they did. Packed tents wherever they played certainly confirmed Dublin’s Le Galaxie are here to stay. And in a big way.

9. Girls Names and Twinkranes

When?: Tuesday, 22nd December
Where?: Whelan’s (Upstairs)
How much?: €10
Why?: Another Irish band building up a serious head of steam in recent times, Belfast’s Girls Names take their carefree surf-pop to the smaller room on Wexford Street. Read a glowing review of their record Dead to Me from Pitchfork here.

10. New Jackson, Ships, I Am The Cosmos, White Collar Boy, Get Down Edits, Handsome Paddy and more in

When?: Monday, 31st December
Where?: The Grand Social
How much?: €15
Why?: So much himming and hawing over where to go on New Year’s Eve. To The Grand Social with you for a glorious night of electronic beats. You’re welcome.
