Cork Gig Guide: December 3rd-December 9th

The first full week of December is choc-a-bloc with gigs with three listings jumping off the page…
First, folky sisters Rachel and Becky Unthanks return to Cork on Tuesday for an audiovisual experience labelled Songs from The Shipyards in the Opera House before Martin Hayes, Thomas Bartlett, Dennis Cahill,Iarla Ó Lionaird and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh aka trad supergroup The Gloaming prepare to wow all in the Triskel Arts Centre’s Christchurch on the following night (Wednesday). I was fortunate to catch the latter last year and was simply blown away by the quintet’s performance. Simply incredible. Completing the big midweek threesome is English songwriter and former Pulp guitarist Richard Hawley who tests out the new soundsystem in The Savoy on Thursday night.

Other gigs of note include tireless Japanese stalwarts MONO on Caroline Street (Wednesday), former Million Dead frontman-turned-acoustic troubadour Frank Turner in Cyprus Avenue, the annual Jagermeister Freezer Sessions in Rearden’s, an exhibition launch by audio-visual artists Feel Good Lost in The Pavilion featuring live music provided by Daithi (all on Thursday) and the Godfather of hip-hop Grandmaster Flash in Cyprus Avenue on Friday.
