Weekly Cork Gig Guide: 17th-23rd June 2014

This week in Cork: Donnelly, The Careers, Imelda May, Sun Ladder and more..

Leeside’s punk prince Finbarr Donnelly is celebrated this week with the music of the former frontman of legendary Cork bands Nun Attax, Five go Down to the Sea? and Beethoven revived for a night in The Pavilion, marking 25 years since the charismatic singer passed on. Featuring original guitarist Ricky Dineen and a super-group comprised of a selection of Cork musicians this one’s taking place on Carey’s Lane on Wednesday evening.

Jumping back to Cork’s present, a whole host of local talent rock the city on Thursday evening with soul collective Shookrah (formerly Moustache Latte) in The Crane Lane Theatre and the very promising The Careers (joined by the just as electric Lost in Mexico) playing earlier that same evening, the latter downstairs in The Pavilion.

The weekend then belongs to The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band (Friday – Crane Lane Theatre) and Dublin rockabilly queen Imelda May (Saturday – Live at the Marquee) with The Shaker Hymn sharing their melodies by the seaside (Sunday at 6pm – Pine Lodge (Myrtleville)). Brooklyn rockers Sun Ladders reopen the following week then with a late show on Phoenix Street.
