Weekly Cork Gig Guide:1st-7th July 2014

This week in Cork: Brian Wilson, Drenge, The Prodigy and more..

All’s quiet on the southern front this week. Well, that is if you count the visit of a bonafide surf-pop genius for 4th July celebrations quiet. Yup, Brian Wilson is back in town to run through his collection of harmony-heavy, feel-good hits down at the Marquee (Friday) just two days after eternal firestarters The Prodigy do their damn-dest to raze the temporary tent to the tarmac.

*Uncompromising song titles such as ‘I Want To Break You in Half’ and ‘I Don’t Want To Make Love To You’ suggest Drenge, a grunge-rock twosome from a tiny honeypot village located in England’s East Midlands, deal in black and white: you either rock or you don’t. And rock they shall upon their first visit to Cork for a date in Cyprus Avenue on the second day of the month. Fans of Channel 4’s X-Men-for-the-disenchanted show Misfits may be familiar with the frenzied riff reverie of ‘Bloodsport’, which featured heavily in the advertising campaign for the popular Robert Sheehan-fronted television series.

*Published as part of Incoming with The G-Man in the July edition of Insert Title.

Also going down around town this week:

  • Original Nirvana drummer Chad Channing’s pop-rock machine Before Cars in Cyprus Avenue (Thursday)
  • Mark Geary in Sirius Arts Centre (Cobh) (Friday)
  • Collective Beats electronic music festival featuring a whole host of local electronic acts from 5pm including Fish Go Deep, and Jet Li in The Thatch, Lisgoold (Saturday)
  • American country songwriter Aoife O’Donovan in Coughlan’s (Sunday)
