Cork gig guide: 15th-21st September 2015

This week in Cork: Pretty much everybody.

Dear G-Man, With Electric Picnic closing the curtain on the Irish summer festival season, I'm having problems adjusting to the thoughts of not being able to see dozens of international and Irish bands in a small geographical area over the course of a long weekend. Please HELP!
Yours truly, Dirk from Douglas

Well concerned reader, I have just the fix for you! Over the course of the coming weekend, make sure to wrap up warm, keep yourself out and about and take two spoons of Clonakilty's International Guitar Festival if out west or else gargle some Sounds From a Safe Harbour with water. You'll be right as rain in no time!

For further details on Sounds From a Safe Harbour see a recap on the blog here but must-sees surely include 21st century trad titans The Gloaming (Thursday, Cork Opera House), a dancehall date with This Is How We Fly (Friday, Firkin Crane), an escape into the imagination of Lotte Reiniger with Amiina's Animagica (Saturday, 4pm, Triskel Christchurch), St. Luke's mass with Julianna Barwick (Saturday, 6pm, St. Luke's Church) and Bedroom Community and pals antics in Everyman Palace, Saturday (10.30pm). That's not even mentioning the FREE music trail which sees This Is The Kit play The Bodega on Saturday!

Out west the audio adventures are laid out by Sam Amidon, Jeffrey Lewis, The Octopus Project, Valerie June and more. For all the details on Clonakilty's International Guitar Festival visit clonguitarfest.com.

Apologies if there are lots of shows missing from this week's preview but, due to a certain pesky festival and the physical limitations of a particular writer's body, it had to be done a week in advance.

  • Culture Night in various venues including Hope Is Noise and Hags in Cyprus Avenue (Friday)
