Festival: Irish bands at The Great Escape

Irish artists to catch in Brighton in May...

It's still a couple of months off yet but for any well prepared, highlighter-armed Great Escapers sitting down to sift through the hundreds of acts playing the Brighton showcase in May, take note of the eclectic range of Irish options on offer. In no particular order, here are my top three tips:

1. Saint Sister

Having commanded national attention with a set on Irish television's flagship music show Other Voices, Morgan MacIntyre and Gemma Doherty are now focusing on the rest of the world with a show at SXSW already under their belts. Dark transfixing "atmosfolk".

2. Colm Mac Con Iomaire

As well as being an integral member of an internationally recognised rock band for the best part of a quarter century, Frames fiddle player Colm Mac Con Iomaire's subtle solo output stands as sweet as it does strong.

3. Bonzai

From being born in Indiana, growing up in Ireland and now living in London, 19 year old Bonzai
has already seen more of the world than most. Seamlessly shimmying from R&B and hip-hop to electronica and pop, it's the beat that lies at the heart of all of Bonzai's tracks. A second EP is on the way.
