This week in Cork: Saul Williams, August Wells and more…
Over a decade has passed since Saul Williams first shook the music world with his raging, rap-rock second record, Saul Williams. Back with his sixth studio release, MartyrLoserKing, the poet/musican/actor’s visit to Cork is worth the ticket price alone just to witness how the Caroline Street venue’s walls cope – or don’t – with the sheer ferocity of the New Yorker’s scintillating style of storytelling.
Having signed with FIFA Records (Frank & Walters, Slow Motion Heroes) and played several sold-out shows on Leeside in recent times, Ken Griffin – formerly of Dublin noisepop foursome Rollerskate Skinny – and New York pianist John Rauchenberger have unofficially come to call Cork August Wells’ European HQ. Profile raising performances on RTÉ’s Other Voices and as Glen Hansard’s special guests at Vicar Street suggest these shows will be a tight squeeze.
