Cork Gig Guide: 4th-10th October

This week in Cork: Hilary Woods, Stars of The Lid, Levis’ Secret Song session, Lodgefest ’16 & more…

Hilary Woods serves up her enchanting mix of night-time noir when she visits Gulpd Cafe on Sunday evening. Far removed from her indie-pop period as a bass player with JJ72, Woods’ introduced listeners to a new world of eerie electronics and atmospheric vocals on EPs Night and now Heartbox.

*Starlets of the simmering, slow build, Stars of the Lid’s Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride tour new material with string ensemble the Echo Collective and long time visual collaborator and projectionist Luke Savisky in tow. Seminal architects of ambient drone, the duo’s first Irish concert in almost a decade will feature frequencies from a nifty “little” device called a vintage Moog 55 Modular Synthesizer; Wear wellies to protect yourself from tech-heads frothing at the mouth. Happening in Triskel Christchurch, Saturday.

For those keen to hit the road, two day sessions cater for very different listening needs. First is the now annual pilgrimage – if quite a lot later than previous years – to Myrtleville for Lodgefest ’16 with rock-haven Pine Lodge playing host to Hope Is Noise (launching fourth studio album Demons), Ten Past Seven, Horse and Onkalo for a night of fret-filled action. A bus will be running from Cork City. See the official event here for details on how to get a seat.

Those looking for a more acoustic/americana-driven day out, wait until Sunday for the return of Levis’ Secret Song Ballydehob session. Tickets cost €35 and the music starts at 3pm with the entire line-up a complete surprise. For those who are new to Levis’, just go, go, go.
