Cork Film Festival 2016

Much for music lovers to munch on at this year’s film feast…
The full programme for the 61st Cork Film Festival is now available with plenty of music documentaries and music-related events featured. Below are some of the highlights:

Gimme Danger
The Everyman
Saturday, 12th November, 9.30pm

Having featured Iggy Pop in a number of his own films, Jim Jarmusch was always the best bet when putting together a close-up of punk pioneers The Stooges. Gimme Danger digs into the archives to relive the energy that powered “the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band ever”.

Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho
Gate Cinema
Monday, 14th November, 1.30pm

I was first really turned on to the late Robbie Basho’s genius following a chat with longtime pal Glenn Jones (interview here). Liam Barker’s focus on the gifted guitarist will screen in The Gate on Monday afternoon.

fLux
St. Finbarre’s Cathedral
Thursday, 17th November, 7.30pm, 9pm
Friday, 18th November, 7pm, 9pm

Although intrigued, I have no idea what to expect from fLux so here’s the official press release: “Musical innovators Eat My Noise invite you to experience a reimagining of the original organ at St Finbarre’s Cathedral in a unique and never-before-seen way, brought into the present day like never before, in collaboration with artist David Mathuna’s stunning visuals. Filling the cathedral with projections and light, combining the power of the first synthesizer with that of it’s electronic descendants, to create an entirely new experience. fLux is an overload for the senses not to be missed.”

I Shot Bi Kidude
Triskel Christchurch
Friday, 18th November, 8.45pm

Andy Jones’ mystery movie/tribute to Zanzibar singer Bi Kidude, the oldest singer on the world music stage, has been described as a “musical thriller”. A must watch at this year’s festival.
