Cork Gig Guide: 24th-30th January

This week in Cork: Ballincollig Winter Music Festival, James Vincent McMorrow, Wallis Bird, Sillk EP launch & more…

Barely four weeks through the new year and already Cork is bouncing with festivals as the 8th edition of The Ballincollig Winter Music Festival warms one of Cork’s largest satellite towns from 24th-29th. Featuring a blend of international, national and local songwriters, the gathering not only features live performances but also workshops for the more hands-on listeners. Highlights include American banjo player Sarah Jarosz (Tuesday), and Cork’s own indie masters The Frank & Walters (Saturday). For the full line-up visit www.wintermusicfestival.ie.

Elsewhere, James Vincent McMorrow shows his soaring popularity by playing a couple of nights at Cork Opera House (Wednesday and Thursday) with Wallis Bird back in Cork for a second week running with a Coughlan’s-hosted Oliver Plunkett gig set for Friday following a venue move (from AMP.)

The delayed EP launch for gypsy folk foursome Sillk is officially unveiled on Friday evening in The Village Hall on St. Patrick’s Quay with the €12 entry fee gaining you access on the night and a copy of Time is a Clock. Elaine Malone supports on the night.

Also going down around town this week:

  • James McMurtry in Coughlan’s (Thursday)
  • Divan in De Barra’s/Sirius Arts Centre  (Friday/Saturday)
  • January edition of BYOB electronic meet-up Diffract in The Kino (Saturday)
