Cork Gig Guide: 7th-13th February

Mark Eitzel – Cyprus Avenue (Saturday)
This week in Cork: Mark Eitzel, Jim Ghedi, Frightened Rabbit, Loah & more…

Mark Eitzel
Saturday 11th February | Cyprus Avenue | 8pm, €20

As the voice of cult indie group and slowcore pioneers American Music Club, Mark Eitzel forged a cult following throughout the 80’s and 90’s, before setting out down a more solitary path. A tenth solo record – Hey Mr Ferryman – will have reached record shop shelves by the time the San Francisco singer reaches Caroline Street in February.*

Saturday night is only disappointing in the fact that there are three shows happening simultaneously that I would love to take in. As Mr. American Music Club settles into Cyprus Avenue, Sheffield guitarist Jim Ghedi will be getting cosy in Gulpd Cafe. Rory O’Brien (Ten Past Seven, Rory Francis O’Brien)’s Dancing Bears open proceedings on Tobin Street at 7pm. Carried By Waves play their/his first live show in quite some time with an early Crane Lane gig on Saturday night. See an extract below from my Top Cork Albums of 2016 article which featured CBW’s record at #2.

2. Carried By WavesResolute (Independent)
Ronan McCann’s (mostly) one-man magnum opus has largely gone unnoticed due to a distinct lack of touring (excluding a solitary afternoon launch show at Cork School of Music.) Heartfelt laments (‘The Sea Between’) and dreamy anthems (‘Resonation Day’) surf a tide of electronica that any other year could have carried Resolute to top spot.*

The top two stand-outs from earlier in the week come in the very contrasting guises of Scottish folk-rockers Frightened Rabbit (Cyprus Avenue, Wednesday) and soul-folk via Sierra Leone/Maynooth’s Loah (Sirius Arts Centre, Friday.)

Also going down around town this week:

  • The Prairie Jaywalkers continue a new bluegrass session in Coughlan’s (Tuesday)
  •  Preston Reed in De Barra’s (Thursday)
  • Jack O’Rourke in Levis’ Corner House (Sunday)
