Cork Gig Guide: 4th-10th April

Honeyblood – Cyprus Avenue, Friday
This week in Cork: Honeyblood, Ten Past Seven, John Prine, Samantha Crain, Rusangano Family & more…

From legendary country outlaws to Choice Prize winning hip-hop and reunited post-rock favourites, it’s bordering on silly how busy pre-Easter week is for gigs. Scottish indie twosome Stina Marie Claire Tweeddale and Cat Myers, Honeyblood, bring their brand of Glaswegian garage rock to Cyprus Avenue on Friday, the same night that country legend John Prine plays a sold-out Cork Opera House show. If the grammy-winning folk singer’s last show at COH is anything to go by (I swear I’d pay money just to hear the writer of songs like ‘In Spite of Ourselves’ and ‘Sam Stone’ talk for 3 hours,) this is going to be another special evening on Emmet Place.

Folks who like their live music loud have plenty of options this week as Galwegian hardcore fivesome Ilenkus launch new 7″ Hunger with the help of Horse and Bailer in The Poor Relation (Friday) while Ten Past Seven return for their first Cork show in over 3 years, teaming with Golden Oriole for a show in An Spailpin (Saturday). See here for more details on the latter.

Following their deserved Choice Music Prize victory, and probably the most universally welcomed decision in the history of the awards, Rusangano Family are down south for a Saturday night De Barra’s show and it’s worth making the trip out west as it’s likely the trio are going to play a lot bigger venues in future with international tours surely on the radar now.

All of this without yet mentioning August Wells seaside show in Sirius Arts Centre (Thursday); Oklahoma songwriter Samantha Crain playing songs from her new album You Had Me At Goodbye in Coughlan’s (Sunday); Californian Jim White from celebrated Americana-loving label Loose in Cyprus Avenue (Sunday); Dublin indie rock trio Fang Club take in two Cork dates with De Barra’s (Friday) and Cyprus Avenue (Saturday) closing off their recent Irish tour; and Montreal’s NEeMA, a firm favourite of Leonard Cohen, extends a busy weekend with a set in Cyprus Avenue on Monday evening.

Also going down around town this week:

  • Mick Flannery in De Barra’s (Wednesday)
  • Cuar launch new album Roscanna in Gulpd (Thursday)
  • Ballydehob Jazz Festival launch in The Woodford (Thursday)
  • Irish all-star group with Liam Ó’Maonlai in Triskel (Saturday)
