Weekly Cork Gig Guide: 29th July – 12th August

This week in Cork: Indie ’14, Daniel Martin Moore, Spies, Skib Arts Festival, Quarter and more..

August: a month of lions, virgins and erections en masse; I’m talking astrology and tent-pitching here people, what else? As the Summer considers climax the trees flirt with a new-found passion for Autumnal finery, school children rush to wring the last drop of adventure from their remaining days of freedom, while baby-wipes, ponchos and poo-rolls are stuffed into seldom-seen rucksacks, probably never to be seen again as thousands prepare to flock to the fields, ensuring a right Roman send-off for Augustus.*

As Castlepalooza and Electric Picnic engulf elsewhere, it is the return of Indiependence to Deer Farm for three days of mud, music and mayhem that captures the interest of southern-situated festival fans. Nine years on from its original inception, the Mitchelstown meet-up’s 2014 musical menagerie features a whole host of international fowl migrating south for the August bank holiday weekend. Legendary hip-hop hawks Public Enemy, post-punk London larks White Lies and West Sussex song-sparrow Tom Odell perch high on a line-up also featuring Wicklow warbler Hozier, fresh from fluffing his feathers at Glastonbury (some say the biggest nest of them all). More frequently spotted but no less exotic native species on show include The Altered Hours, The Vincent(s) and Elastic Sleep so make sure to complete those canvas nests nice and early. (1st-3rd)*

Comfy bed-besotted’, city-confined gig goers may fulfil festival frolics with a twist thanks to Quarter who host their latest multidisciplinary arts gathering in the Triskel TDC from 2nd-4th August. Film screenings, poetry recitals, topical discussion and live art are just some of the events planned with music supplied on opening night by Cork composer Irene Buckley as part of a new collaboration with UCC gamelan crew Scintilla (Saturday) and alien-pop duo Mirrorman and Glitterface aka Nanu Nanu (Sunday).*

Midweek it’s to Gulpd Café for the soothing sounds of folk gospel guy Daniel Martin Moore on Wednesday before making a break across Washington Street for Spies, Hags and Partisan Crowds in Black Dog Saloon for another excellent Alliance Promotions showcase.
