Weekly Cork Gig Guide: 12th-18th May 2015

Wyvern Lingo (Oliver Plunkett)
Young Wonder (Savoy Theatre)

This week in Cork: Young Wonder, Wyvern Lingo, Chris Smither and more.

Saturday is all about the launch of electro twosome Young Wonder‘s début album, The Birth. Released in Ireland on 15th May (18th elsewhere), the full length record should see the Cork duo build upon their already glowing reputation as not only an illuminating live act but a recording force both home and abroad. Tune to Green on Red 7pm-10pm on Sunday where I will be playing tracks from the new album or better yet, get yourself to The Savoy on Saturday night.

VENUE CHANGE
Young Wonder‘s Saturday show originally scheduled for The Savoy has been moved to Cyprus Avenue.

Earlier in the week Bray threesome Wyvern Lingo float into town for a show in The Oliver Plunkett on Thursday night. Saoirse, Karen and Caoimhe will be playing tracks from their latest EP, The Widow Knows. An evening of harmonious folk-pop is on the cards.

New Orleans-raised songwriting veteran Chris Smither is back in Cork for an intimate appearance in Coughlan’s on Douglas Street. Having released career retrospective Still On the Levee only last year, fans of one of the original “Monsters of Folk” (touring with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Dave Alvin and Tom Russell) will be walked through Smither’s vast repertoire going all the way back to 1971’s I’m A Stranger, Too.

Rounding off the week (if Monday can be said to be the end of anything), will be Kenny Anderson’s prolific King Creosote who pays a visit to the Half Moon Theatre.

Also going down around town this week:
