Weekly Cork Gig Guide: 19th-25th May 2015

Villagers – Opera House

This week in Cork: Villagers, MNDSGN, Arthur Russell’s Instrumentals and more.

Conor O’Brien and team returned earlier in the year with Darling Arithmetic, Villagers‘ third – and far more personal – studio album so expect lots of new songs when they roll into Cork Opera House on Saturday evening, drawing close to the end of a mammoth couple of months which has seen the Dubliners pack in both a U.K. and European tour.

For those that fancy something a little more sonically adventurous, head to Triskel Christchurch for Crossings, a special concert which sees The Vanbrugh Quartet collaborating with a number of composers and musicians including Linda Buckley, Niall Vallely and the wonderful Iarla Ó’Lionáird. With nothing recorded as of yet, the official word promises “the ensemble will perform original compositions by Linda Buckley and Niall Vallely incorporating flute, fiddle and electronic music”. Sounds good to me.

Rewinding back a day to Friday there’s another clash, again involving Triskel Christchurch which, in collaboration with Plugd Records, plays host to Arthur Russell’s Instrumentals. Having only been performed six times ever, this performance will be the European premiere of what is believed to be one of the New Yorker’s most important pieces of music.

Across town, MNDSGN (pronounced “mind design”), STINK, ApocalypsE and Midnight Marauder DJs combine to create Sudden Club, local promoters Southern Hospitality Board’s start of Summer celebration in The Sextant.

Anyone in the mood for some midweek mayhem then to Barrack Street with you for Midweek Mixer #2 featuring Horse, Ealadha, Catacombs and a DJ set from New Noise (DJ set) happening in Mr. Bradley’s of Barrack Street on Wednesday night.
