Cork Gig Guide: 14th-20th February

Claudia Schwab
This week in Cork: Claudia Schwab, Leap-ington ’17, John Blek, Jack O’Rourke & more…

Fiddle-playing folk-fuser Claudia Schwab unveils her new record, Attic Mornings, with a couple of Cork dates this week beginning with Clon’s De Barra’s on Thursday evening. The Austrian composer has been living in Ireland for quite some time, passing through recently with gigs in Gulpd and Connolly’s. Fans of Schwaub, who slips seamlessly from hoedown scrawl to yodel, can catch a free afternoon concert in UCC on Friday afternoon.

Elsewhere there’s an abundance of local talent on display as both John Blek (featured #3 on Totally Cork’s Albums of the Year lists, see below) and Jack O’Rourke (charted #5 in Irish album charts with debut record Dreamcatcher) commit to county Cork dates playing Connolly’s of Leap and Sirius Arts Centre of Cobh on Friday night respectively. Connolly’s heats up Saturday evening with the annual Pine Lodge gathering (Pine For Your Loved Ones) finding new residence to accommodate the raw power and thrust of Leap-ington ’17 featuring rock in all shades from Hope Is Noise, Rest, Horse and Liminals. Bus details can be found via the official FB event.

#3 John Blek – Cut The Light (Independent)

John “Blek” O’Connor’s solo folk expeditions permit him passage through heady terrain best traversed alone, simultaneously providing a platform for his increasingly dexterous fretwork (most notably on instrumental piece ‘Newborns.’) It’s not all lonesome work though with The Hard Ground’s Marlene Enright wispy vocals conjuring contrast on ‘Lightness vs. Weight’ over Davie Ryan (Hard Ground, Paul Dunlea Group)’s thoughtful brushes.*
