New music: Esmerine
Esmerine…
“New” is a bit of an elongation of the truth seeing as their first record was released back in 2003, but the three-letter word describes my recent relationship with Esmerine just right. Formed by (now former) members of both Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Bruce Cawdron) and Thee Silver Mt Zion (Rebecca Foon) over ten years ago, the Montreal explorers of cello and percussion limits have released a number of illuminating instrumental records including 2011’s La Lechuza, recorded mostly by and featuring the voice of fellow Montrealer Patrick Watson.
Featuring various musicians throughout the years, the permanent core of Cawdron and Foon are currently joined by Jamie Thompson and Brian Sanderson. A new record – expected to feature several Turkish musicians – is on the way courtesy of Constellation later this year. Rachel’s fans should love them. Proof awaits in the pudding players below.
