Cork Gig Guide (Feb 27th-Mar 4th)

The week ahead may be slightly less manic than the previous few but Out On a Limb‘s Windings – who are nail-bitingly close to sealing their current fundit campaign (click here for more details) – and local psych-jazz instrumental quintet The Great Balloon Race will put on a good show in The Pavilion come Saturday night, another freebie from the Carey’s Lane venue that is really making a name for itself as regards quality weekend live music.

Elsewhere on the same night bits and pieces of excellent Irish bands such as Adebisi Shank, Elk and Magic Pockets mash together to become No Spill Blood to become the latest band to play the Triskel‘s auditorium. Hopefully the possibility will be there to take in most of The Pav happenings before booting across the city centre to Tobin Street to catch the majority of the set from Ireland’s latest supergroup. Or you can settle for just one gig that night…if for some reason that tickles your fancy.

Other notable happenings include a solo performance from Will They Run‘s Diarmuid O’Leary in Gulpd Café on Thursday, Cork shoe-gazers Hush War Cry‘s Cyprus Avenue appearance on Friday who will treat their ever expanding number of fans to live versions of tracks that will appear on the Apparitions EP set for release in April, When I’m 64 – a Rory Gallagher festival taking place in Triskel Christchurch – that will include a screening of Irish Tour 1974 and plenty of live bands playing the music of the legendary blues/rock guitarist and on Sunday another legend comes to town in the form of country star Nanci Griffith in Everyman Palace on MacCurtain Street.
