Cork Gig Guide: 20th-26th September

This week in Cork: Coughlan’s Live Music Festival, Ger Wolfe, The Frank & Walters, Rats on Rafts & more…

The most eclectic Coughlan’s Live Music Festival dominates this week’s listings as Cavan folkie Lisa O’Neill, the incendiary Rusangano Family and alt-country Corkonians John Blek & The Rats descend upon Douglas Street for self-imposed long weekend. Many of the shows are free but the ticketed ones are selling out quickly so come prepared!

Taking place across the same weekend is The Great Irish Beer Festival featuring The Frank & Walters, Slow Motion Heroes, Hope Is Noise and a whole host of Irish rock bands ready to put tunes to the booze. See www.greatirishbeerfestival.ie for the full details.

Those itching for a weekend road trip then wind your way towards West Cork as Clonakilty’s International Guitar Festival returns for a full weekend of rock ‘n’ roll shows with 90% of the concerts scheduled between 15th-18th September FREE. Sydney alt-folk quartet All Our Exes Live in Texas‘s harmony-laden songs are a must catch on Sunday afternoon, following an all-action sweatfest for The Rednecks on Sunday night of course. See the full programme over on clonguitarfest.com.

Once you’re on the road that day maybe take a swing across to Cobh, for very good reason. Continuing on their absorbing array of gigs, Sirius Arts Centre welcome the wonderful talents of Brigid Mae Power who will showcase songs from latest album I Told You The Truth with support from Brumes.

Did I even mention that Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor and D.A.R.K. (featuring Dolores O’Riordan & Andy Rourke) will be in Cyprus Avenue this weekend? No? Well they will be. Friday and Saturday respectively. Now go and get your tickets and support your local music scene.

Also going down around town this week:

  • Acid Mother’s Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO in Crane Lane Theatre (Wednesday)
  •  Cork Improvised Music Club in Gulpd Cafe (Thursday)
  • Rats on Rafts in Crane Lane Theare (Monday)
