Capital Capers and Elsewhere Escapades (July 11th-July 17th)

tUnE-yArDs – Vicar Street, 15th July

The magnificently mental Merril Gerbus rolls her feather boa’d, ukulele-slinging, multi-tracking tUnE-yArDs wagon into town on Sunday for what will be a memorable night in Vicar Street.

The incendiary firecracker that is 2011’s W H O K I L L featured on the majority of respectable end-of-year lists (including this cheeky top 50) and live performances – I was fortunate enough to be up front-right at September’s EOTR – backed up the Connecticut canary’s brilliance confirming her rule over both the recording and live music worlds.

This evening will see local lo-fi lotharios You Kiss By The Book launch their album in The Grand Social while the “slightly” louder Girl Band continue the 10 Days in Dublin shenanigans over in Twisted Pepper.

Living legend Paul Simon brings all-time class Graceland – 25 years old this year -to life in The O2 on Thursday (and Friday actually) while Leopardstown Racecourse plays host to Richie Egan‘s Choice Music Prize-collecting Jape.

The first night of the weekend sees the continuation of the weekly Phantom Live shows in The Academy with Louisiana songwriter Dylan LeBlanc the guest on Friday while devil-fightin’ Dirtdaubers take over upstairs on Wexford Street.

Saturday is all about independent Irish as Le Galaxie launch their new EP in Button Factory (with help from quite a talented bunch of pals), electro-pop newcomers I’m Your Vinyl in Twisted Pepper, Kilkenny multi-instrumentalist R.S.A.G. in The Grand Social and plenty more taking place on the weekend’s flagship evening.

It’s more of the same on Sunday with a BYOB event to knock your socks off. – Disparate Melody in the Monster Truck Gallery will feature buckets of excellent Irish bands from 6pm including a DJ slot from Le Galaxie and live tunes from Sleep Thieves, Owensie, Little xs for eyes and more in Temple Bar.

Usually this is where the preview dies a bit of a death but Tuesday has gone and got itself all above its station with The Boss in The RDS, Nouvelle Vague in The Workman’s Club and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes in Olympia Theatre all peacock-proudly strutting their stuff on the same night.
